CLINICAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who is the ideal candidate for BTL Vanquish ME® treatments? The new Vanquish ME® treatment is ideal for healthy patients who have moderately sized areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise such as the abdomen and love handles. The BTL Vanquish ME procedure is not intended for weight loss. Patients with electronic implanted devices should never be treated with BTL Vanquish ME.
Metal implants? Patients with metal implants, excluding dental implants, should not be treated. There is the potential for the electromagnetic energy to heat the metal, which could then heat and possibly damage the surrounding tissue. BTL has not studied the potential effects the energy may have on metal in the body; for that reason, all metal implants are considered a contraindication and it is at the discretion of the healthcare professional to determine if the patient should be treated, considering the location of the metal implant relative to the treatment area.
Female or male breasts? We do not recommend treating over male or female breasts.
Visceral fat? Visceral fat located deep in the abdominal cavity under the muscle cannot be treated. Not enough energy penetrates deep enough to produce enough heat to cause any type of change to the fatty tissue or underlying organs.
Hernia? We do not recommend treating a patient with any type of hernia in the treatment area. There is a risk of heating the underlying organ that is now protruding into the subcutaneous space.
Post lapband procedure? Patients with a lapband can be treated only if no metal component is present and the patient is fully healed from the surgical procedure.
How many BTL Vanquish ME® treatment areas can be treated in one session? We recommend that the total treatment time NOT exceed 1 hour. The standard protocol is once a week. Patient has to be well hydrated, we recommend 3 liters of water daily for 3 days prior to starting the treatments and maintaining the same daily amount for the entire course of treatment, including three days after the last session.
Why does the BTL Vanquish ME device interfere with other devices and what can be done about it? The BTL Vanquish ME device emits an electromagnetic field. If other devices are not properly shielded from 27.12 MHz there may be interference.
Why is menstruation listed as a contraindication? We recommend waiting until the end of the menstrual cycle before treating with BTL Vanquish ME. The rationale is that if treating at the beginning of the cycle, the BTL Vanquish ME treatment may cause a heavier period. This is due to heating the abdominal cavity and the resulting vasodilation. This can cause the uterine lining to shed a little quicker than normal resulting in a heavier period.
Some of my patients develop a tender lump under the surface of the skin a day or two after a BTL Vanquish ME treatment. What is it and how long will it last? A common side effect associated with BTL Vanquish ME treatment is inflammation of the fat. When an area of fat becomes overheated during treatment the inflammatory process causes the area of fat to become encapsulated in fibrous tissue. This fat will eventually die (become necrotic). The body will break down the necrotic fat over time and rid itself of cellular debris like it would in the normal healing process. If the nodule is tender, cold compresses and NSAIDs can help minimize any discomfort. Gentle massage may help the body break down the nodule more quickly. BTL Vanquish ME treatment cannot be administered until the nodule is no longer tender to touch. Depending on the size of the nodule, it can last from days to months.
